Getting around the house

Fourteen Questions to Ask an Elevator or Stairlift Installer

Quotes for the same job can differ widely, mostly because they do not include the same things. Asking every company the same questions is the only way to compare them.

About the company

  1. Are you licensed for this work in Arizona, and what is the licence number? You can look a contractor up with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors.
  2. How long have you installed this particular brand and model?
  3. Can I speak to two recent customers in the Phoenix area?
  4. Who carries out the installation: your own employees or a subcontractor?

About the job

  1. What building, electrical and finishing work is included in this price, and what is not?
  2. Who applies for the permit and arranges the inspection?
  3. How long will the house be disrupted, and which rooms?
  4. What happens if you open a wall and find something unexpected?

About safety

  1. What happens during a power cut? Is there battery lowering?
  2. Is there a phone or alarm inside the car, and does it work without the house Wi-Fi?
  3. How are the doors and gates interlocked, and what stops the car moving if one is open?

About the years afterwards

  1. What does the warranty cover, for how long, and does it depend on a paid service plan?
  2. How quickly do you respond to a breakdown, and what does a call-out cost?
  3. How easy are parts to get if you stop selling this brand?

Warning signs

Be careful with anyone who wants full payment up front, will not put the scope in writing, or pushes you to decide the same day. Those are the same pressure tactics described in the four signs of a scam.
